This week Thursday rolled around a lot sooner than I was expecting! Yesterday I found myself contemplating skipping a Thankful Thursday post because I was feeling so overwhelmed and didn’t have a post planned. Although I had a lengthy to-do list to get through once I got home from the internship, I knew a yoga class was in order to keep myself from going nutty sitting at the computer studying all night.

I have always had a hard time quieting my mind during yoga. Sometimes I feel like the quieter the room, the louder my mind becomes. I think of everything going on, what I need to be doing next, what I need to write on my list to get done (if you haven’t figured it out from previous posts I am Type A all the way!). My goal for the class last night was to simply relax. Not to focus on my flexibility in each pose, but to settle my

mind, stay present in the room and relax while working my way through each series of poses.

Towards the end of the class while we were all standing flamingo-style in tree pose the teacher announced that this was  “the pose of gratitude”. While in the pose and the savasana that followed we were instructed to thank our bodies for all they do for us. It was like a light bulb went off, those words really hit home. Often I am thankful to have the ability to exercise but how often do I actually stop and thank my body for all it does? We continually strive for better results, to lift stronger weights, to run further distances, but when do we truly stop and express gratitude for doing these things?

On the drive home I thought about all the things I have done physically. I thought about all the stressors I have put my body through both in my competitive basketball days and more recently when finishing my first half marathon. It saddened me a little to think that I never really stopped to thank my body for this. It’s almost as if we expect these results. Sure, I am grateful to achieve such accomplishments but have I really ever thanked myself?

This week, thank yourself for each accomplishment you push your body to achieve. Take time to thank your body for all it does.

    You are right. We take our bodies for granted so often.
    I find I have difficulty quieting my mind during bikram. I don’t find it good for me mentally. That is one of the main reasons that I do yoga. That is a lot of why I don’t like bikram as much.

    It is so important to remember how truly lucky we are. I know I need to check in more often with that for sure!
